List of products by brand Franchetti
Franchetti is the flagship wine of the Passopisciaro estate, a super-Etna produced from Petit Verdot and Cesanese d'Affile grapes planted on rock and volcanic ash in Contrada Guardiola. The plants were planted in the early 2000s immediately after the purchase of the estate by Andrea Franchetti, with a sixth plant with high density, 90cm x 90cm and more than 10,000 plants per hectare. When he arrived on Etna, Andrea Franchetti had in mind a wine that was more dense and concentrated than were the light and delicate wines produced with native grapes.
Therefore, while the wines produced with Nerello Mascalese represent the wine of the territory with their unique expression of the terroir, Franchetti is a wine from the producer that expresses and represents the idea of wine and the personal vision of a man. To achieve the result he had in mind, Andrea Franchetti planted Petit Verdot, a late variety from Bordeaux and Cesanese d’Affile, an aromatic variety from Lazio that helped save from extinction.
Due to the volcanic soil, the Petit Verdot becomes more spicy and peppery, fine and upright in the body, but always of great structure. The Cesanese d’Affile, on the other hand, more delicate and aromatic, acts as a counterpart to the Petit Verdot, keeping its great aging potential unchanged. 2005 was the first vintage produced.
The result is a highly concentrated wine, black like the lava and volcanic smoke that flow from Etna. Andrea Franchetti describes it as "the wine that comes from the attempt to make a completely different wine on Etna, to express what is my idea of an Etna wine." The assembly changes every year according to the vintage and the results obtained in the vineyard, no predetermined recipes or formulas are followed, only the taste and interpretation of the producer.
The vines are subjected to a careful selection of the bunches, leaving only five fruits per plant, followed by a vinification in steel, with malolactic fermentation and aging in new French oak barrels. Andrea Franchetti's style is evident in all his wines and in all the vintages, year after year it materializes in wines of great richness, depth and complexity that are the hallmarks of his production.
